History

Poudre J’Ouvert was founded in 2018 by a group of friends who wanted to revive the traditional carnival culture of South Trinidad, which was fading away due to modernization and commercialization. They decided to use poudre (powder) as their main medium of expression, as it symbolizes the dust from which we came and to which we will return.

Vision

Poudre J’Ouvert’s vision is to create a carnival experience that is inclusive, authentic, and fun for everyone. They aim to celebrate the diversity and creativity of the people of South Trinidad, and to showcase their rich heritage and culture to the world.

Mission

Poudre J’Ouvert’s mission entails blending the old carnival culture with the new, with its primary focus being South Trinidad. They organize events and activities throughout the year, such as workshops, fetes, and community outreach programs, to promote the poudre art form and to educate the public about the history and significance of carnival. They also participate in the annual J’Ouvert celebration, where they invite people to join them in a colorful and festive parade of poudre, music, and dance.
